Jacob's Farm

Traverse City  ·  On M-72, Three Miles East of Downtown

A 100-year-old farm right on M-72, three miles from downtown TC. Live music every night in summer, wood-fired pizza, a full bar with local craft beer and cocktails, and a sprawling outdoor space with picnic tables, lawn games, and room for kids to actually run around. No reservation needed, dogs welcome, kids welcome, and the kind of atmosphere that makes people stay for four hours when they planned to stay for one.

Clinch Park

Traverse City  ·  West Bay Waterfront

Right on the West Bay waterfront in downtown TC, Clinch Park has one of the best splash pads in northern Michigan — a free, fully interactive water playground with sprayers, jets, and water features that will keep younger kids entertained for hours. There's also a sandy beach right next to it, plus a marina with boats to watch. Bring a towel and a picnic and make an afternoon of it. Free, no admission, right in town.

Downtown Traverse City  ·  Inside The Coin Slot Arcade Bar

The best pizza in TC — New York-style, 20-inch pies with cold-fermented crust, house sauce, and ingredients that are the real deal. Two Sons is inside The Coin Slot, a fantastic arcade bar with 20+ pinball machines and a rotating selection of classic arcade games. Order a pie, let the kids play, and eat between games. One of the best family setups in downtown TC.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

The Dune Climb

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore  ·  Glen Arbor

The first dune is a 10-minute climb and completely worth it for the view of Glen Lake appearing suddenly below you. Then comes the best part: running back down. Kids absolutely love it. The full hike to Lake Michigan is 3.5 miles round trip — harder than it looks and further than it appears. Try to avoid midday, when heat and crowds are peaking. The Dune Climb is one of the most purely fun things you can do in Michigan, regardless of age.

Cherry Republic

Glen Arbor  ·  6026 S. Lake St.

Michigan is the cherry capital of the world, and Cherry Republic is its shrine. The campus in Glen Arbor has something for every age: 200+ cherry products to sample freely, cherry wines and ciders (cherry soda for the kids), the Cherry Public House with a full cherry-infused menu, homemade cherry ice cream, and the pit-spitting arena. It doesn't feel like shopping — it feels like an experience.

Moomers Homemade Ice Cream

Traverse City  ·  7263 N. Long Lake Rd.

Good Morning America crisscrossed the country looking for the best ice cream in America. After 50,000 votes, Moomers won — and the Plummer family hasn't changed a thing since. More than 160 flavors, 20+ available any given day. The signature is Cherries Moobilee — black cherry ice cream with brownie chunks, red and black cherries, and a chocolate fudge swirl. Kids can see the cows grazing in the pasture from the parking lot. This isn't a pit stop. It's a destination.

Platte River Tubing

Riverside Canoes  ·  Honor, MI  ·  On M-22

Riverside Canoes is the only privately-run business left operating inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Rent a tube and float the Lower Platte — crystal clear water averaging 2 to 3 feet deep, warm in summer, lazy current, surrounded by forest. The long trip takes 2 to 3 hours and ends at a sugar sand beach on Lake Michigan. Kids love it. Parents love it. Everyone floats home happy.

Where We Recommend Staying

Streamside — The perfect home base for a family trip up north.

Three bedrooms, a stream running through the property, a fire pit, and a hot tub waiting at the end of a long day at the dunes. Streamside is pet-friendly, private, and positioned right in the heart of the peninsula — close to everything on this list.

The kind of place kids remember as much as the trip itself.
