Scenic Drive

M-22

Empire  ·  North Through Glen Arbor and Leland  ·  Back to Traverse City

M-22 is a beautiful drive in any season, but in mid-September to late October, it becomes something else entirely. The hardwood forest that lines both sides of the road turns amber, orange, and deep red. The lake appears through the trees, impossibly blue. Cherry orchards glow rust and gold. The vineyards above Leelanau have turned yellow. Every pull-off looks like a painting. Drive it slowly, stop often, and don't have anywhere to be. The stretch from Empire north through Glen Arbor and up to Leland is the best single hour of fall color driving in the Midwest.

Fall Activity

Jacob's Farm — Corn Maze & Fall Harvest

Traverse City  ·  7100 E. Traverse Hwy (M-72)

Jacob's Farm transforms completely in fall. The 7-acre corn maze opens in August and runs through October — a new themed design every year, with a nighttime version on select weekends that gets genuinely disorienting. On weekends, the farm serves scratch-made apple cider donuts that sell out fast. Horse-drawn wagon rides through the orchard. U-pick apples. The full bar and wood-fired pizzas are still running. Live music on weekends. The farm sits surrounded by turning hardwoods and apple orchards in full color, making the whole property feel like the best possible version of October.

Hike

Empire Bluff Trail

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore  ·  Empire

One of the best short hikes in Michigan at any time of year, but in fall it's in a different category. The 1.5-mile out-and-back climbs through old beech and maple forest, both peak fall color trees, to an open bluff 400 feet above Lake Michigan. At the top, the Manitou Islands sit across the water and the dunes stretch north. The hardwoods behind you are fully turned, the lake in front is still deep blue. The contrast is spectacular, and a must-see. We recommend going in the morning when the light comes through the trees.

Wine

Old Mission Peninsula Winery Tour

Old Mission Peninsula  ·  Traverse City

The Old Mission Peninsula is home to 10 wineries strung along a 19-mile stretch of land between two bays — and fall is the best time to drive it. Harvest season is underway, the vines are turning gold and copper, and the tasting rooms are pouring whatever just came off the estate. Chateau Chantal — the grandest property on the peninsula, terrace overlooking both bays, acclaimed Riesling. Then Mari Vineyards — estate Italian varietals, small plates, beautiful views. Then Brys Estate — the Tasting Tower flight, one of the most visited wineries in the state. Then Hawthorne Vineyards — a quieter, more intimate tasting room with outstanding Gewürztraminer.

Farm Market

Gallagher's Farm Market

Traverse City  ·  7237 E. Traverse Hwy (M-72)

Gallagher's Farm Market has been on M-72 west of Traverse City since 1972 — a family-run roadside market that becomes something genuinely special in fall. The pumpkin patch sprawls across the lot in every shape, size, and color imaginable. The bakery makes pumpkin cinnamon-sugar donuts fresh daily — warm, light, dusted in sugar, the kind of thing people drive out here specifically for. Homemade pies, fresh apple cider, jams and jellies, local produce straight from the farm. Out back, the petting zoo has pigs, chickens, and goats that kids and adults both end up spending longer with than expected. It's a 10-minute drive from downtown TC and the kind of stop that turns into an hour without anyone noticing.

Village

Fishtown, Leland

Leland  ·  Leelanau Peninsula

Fishtown is a cluster of weathered grey fishing shanties and smokehouses along the Leland River — the last intact commercial fishing village on the Great Lakes. In summer it draws crowds. In October it's quiet, the maples along the river have gone deep red and orange, and the grey of the old cedar shingles against the color is one of the most photographed scenes in Michigan fall. Carlson's Fishery has been smoking fish off the same dock for three generations. The Village Cheese Shanty has some of the best cheese sandwiches you'll ever have. Walk the docks, buy something from Carlson's, and let the afternoon slow down.

Hike

Pyramid Point

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore  ·  Near Glen Haven

The best fall hike on the peninsula. A 2.7-mile loop through old beech-maple forest — both trees at their absolute peak in October — to a 300-foot bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and both Manitou Islands. Beech leaves turn a deep copper gold that holds longer than most other species. The trail is almost always quiet and the overlook faces west into the lake. Come in the afternoon when the light is low and the colors in the forest are lit from behind. It's the hike that makes people want to come back every year.
